There are forces in this world that work unseen. Some guard Natural Law, the cycles of the Universe, and seek to maintain balance, others desire chaos, disorder, and untamed wilderness. While science explains their result, it is the witches who know the mysteries that lie just outside the physical world. Through their arts they summon storms or calm them, their words can break the laws of serpents, they can make the mountains tremble, and raise the dead from their tombs.
Their witchcraft has had a remarkable role in the history of our world, from the earliest poppet used to curse the pharaoh in 3,000 BC, to the gathering of witches in England who raised a storm to keep the Nazis off their shore during WWII. And no other event colors this history than The Witches Sabbath! These assembly has been recounted all over the world through folklore, historical accounts, and still happen today in the underground of every city. Great celebrations of witchcraft, debauchery, frenzy, the giving over to instinct and sin, the civilized unhinged, all centered around The Black Goat, more affectionately known as The Devil.
Who are they, who would dare tread into such a world, and what is their purpose? Witches manifest their will and make real their desires. They find the secret paths and hidden highways through their incantations, rituals, and dedication to their craft. This immense willpower is honored through the adoration of the perfect musculature of those who manifest their will through their physical accomplishments, men whose craft is shaping their bodies through the execution of ritual, their temple the gym, and their tools iron.
Why choose men when women are most closely associated with witches? Throughout history up to 25% of those accused of witchcraft were men. They suffered and died under the title ‘witch’ but their story is rarely told. That coupled with the vast amount of men practicing witchcraft, who identify as witches to this day. This is their story, their moment to sit beside The Devil’s black throne.
‘The Sabbath’ is a project that captures the evocative and seductive emotions of the folklore surrounding witches and their nocturnal meetings vividly told through the exquisiteness of the nude male form. These Bacchic rites let loose our inhibitions and seduce us with their promise of power and grandeur. Gaze upon this dark world and enter the forbidden.
The Sabbath represents the wild, the untamable, that which exists at the edge of society in the liminal darkness. Because it makes people uncomfortable, shows them things they wish to keep hidden, it is under attack. Companies such as Paypal and Patreon have demeaned and devalued the project, reducing it to pornography because it shows the male form in a state of ecstasy and arousal. They have not even a basic grasp of artistic context or history. They seek to censor my project, and Patreon specifically demanded I delete it from my own photography website if I wished to continue using their platform. This is a very personal attack by Puritan America, the very thing the project fights against. This is real, and it is harmful to not only this project, but free artistic expression as a whole. Eroticism in art is as old as time and we will not submit, and we will not be silenced. The project has moved to its own page where I am planning on showcasing it as it evolves into a vividly comprehensive photo grimoire. Until I can find a more suitable platform, attend The Sabbath directly on this site and continue to revel in defiance against these oppressors! - Allan Spiers
There is a world behind our own. A world of shadows, of old gods, and those beings who weave our Fate. This is the world manifested in the renowned photo project, “The Sabbath”, by Allan Spiers Photography. One of the most trusted tools to communicate with this world is the Tarot. This unique and captivating deck based on “The Sabbath” captures the potency and influence that walks around us unseen. During their creation our altars are lit and hymns and chants of evocation are recited. Their design evolves on its own as if guided by an unseen hand. Once complete we let the card speaks and match it to its suit, adding any specific elements such as disks, vessels, staffs, or blades. Whether you are a collector of Tarot, a diviner, or an appreciator of art, this deck will add an esoteric intrigue to any collection.
The Kickstarter will be launching soon so subscribe to keep yourself updated on the project!
Peru has always been a center for folk magic and curious religious practices for centuries. As the birthplace of ‘The Sabbath” creator and photographer, Allan Spiers, it planted a seed whose roots would remain with him throughout his life. Since childhood Allan has always been fascinated in exploring the dark world of the occult. He has studied various forms of witchcraft and occult religion from around the world, he himself initiated in Haitian Vodou, and a practitioner of Religio Romana, the polytheistic religion of ancient Rome, and in 2011 opened the world renowned online occult store, The Vodou Store.
But his world was always split into two, one spiritual, one mundane. Beginning his photography career as a fitness photographer he worked with a lot of models and companies that held firmly Christian beliefs. In order for him to build his fitness photography brand he decided to keep a side of him hidden, that is until 2016.
With the fitness photography industry saturated with mediocrity and copy cat photographers he finally felt it was time to merge the two aspects of himself. He utilized his immense talent for graphic art with his already infamous fitness photography, as well as his spiritual practice of witchcraft to create a project no other photographer could touch. Thus ‘The Sabbath’ was born. An homage to The Devil Himself, and those who revel in His honor!
